Houghton Harrier Lee Dover knocked up the first win of his short athletics career with victory in yesterday’s Lambton Run.

After just two years in the sport, the 28-year-old showed positive intent from the off on his journey around the Earl of Durham’s vast estate.

He showed real aggression as he led throughout the tough multi-terrain race of approximately 10k.

At the finish, in which he reached in 35min 52sec, he was a comfortable nine seconds ahead of runner-up Liam Taylor.

Sunderland Harriers won four of the 5000m race categories in the North East Masters’ Track and Field Championships at Monkton on Saturday.

Kevin Jeffress, despite the heat, had a sparkling race and won by more than one minute from Harriers club-mate Simon O’Donnell.

Over-35 Jeffress recorded a solid 15min 47.5sec to win the race by nearly a lap from O’Donnell, who clocked 16.52.1 to win the Over-40 title.

Sunderland Harrier Jacqueline Etherington was crowned Northern Athletics women’s steeplechase champion in Manchester.

She impressively beat her personal best by nine seconds and dipped under eight minutes for the first time, clocking 7min 56.72sec at Sport City.

It was the Harriers’ first Northern track and field senior women’s championship success since Bev Blakeman won the 800m title in 2001.

Sunderland Harriers stage their 27th annual Penshaw Hill Race for the first time with a May date tonight.

The popular North East Vending sponsored race is normally held in early June, but a congested fixture list has forced the move to the new date.

The race attracted a record 127 runners in 2015 and race secretary John Archer would love to see this number challenged.

Hundreds of athletes will turn out for events staged around the NE region catering for track and field, road runners and multi-terrain athletes.

Sunderland Harriers put in their best ever performance but still just missed out on medals in the National Masters’ Road Relay Championships at Sutton Coldfield on Saturday.

The Over-35 men’s team came fourth in their six-stage relay and the Over-35 women’s team finished fifth in their four-stage race at Sutton Park.
