ROYAL BLUE MEDALS GALORE AT THE WHITLEY BAY SPRING TRACK RELAYS

MANAGER Andy Abbott's sprint squad dominated proceedings in the Senior events at the 3rd Annual Spring Track Relays at Whitley Bay on Sunday.

His team of eight runners took gold in the Senior men and Senior women's 4x100m relay, before going on to win the mixed 4x200m event.

The men's team, comprising Jordan Beavers, Reece Carroll, Andrew Rhodes and Logan Powell, set the ball rolling with an impressive win in the 4x100m race, their unofficial time of 46.7 seconds just missing out on an event record despite the wet conditions.

Continuing on from his successful indoor season, Jordan got the men off to a great start, passing the baton over in first place to Reece, who maintained the lead and passed to Andrew on third leg.

Andrew, who is an U17, ran a fantastic bend to pass on to Logan who, despite having been away from the track for two years, powered home to a comfortable victory from nearest rivals Gateshead Harriers.

Next up was the women's team of Paige Dembry (4th leg), Robyn Taylor (3rd leg), Aimie Hunter (2nd leg) and Anna Harris (1st leg), who once again lead from the start to claim gold in an unofficial time of 54.3 seconds. And the Sunday morning relay training sessions paid off, with three smooth, fuss-free baton changes.

The wet weather subsided in the afternoon for the 4x200m relay races, which had nine teams of two male and two female athletes entered, and once again Sunderland came out on top.

In the second heat Anna ran the first leg, passing on to Paige in second place. Paige managed to narrow the gap considerably, with an impressive run, before passing on to Andrew, who stormed into the lead on the bend and forged a clear gap before passing on to Logan for the final leg to finish in a time of 1:45.9, unofficially.

Sunderland's other team (Robyn, Aimie, Reece and Jordan) also ran an excellent race finishing second in the first heat, coming third overall in the event with a time on the "Manager's" watch of 1:48.0.
