ROYAL BLUES SMASH RECORDS AT THE NORTH EAST MASTERS MEETING

RECORDS were broken and new personal bests were set by Sunderland Harriers at the first North East Masters Athletics Association meeting of the season at Jarrow on Monday night.

Christine Elliott was already the North East FO55 record holder for the hammer, but on Monday evening she surpassed last year's efforts by over a metre with a magnificent throw of 22.76, setting new NEMAA All Time and Track and League records. Her throw also placed her as the joint top female in the hammer event that evening, with Sylvia Hargreaves, from North Shields Poly, also throwing 22.76 to win the FO45 section.

There were over 90 competitors entered for the 3000m but Sunderland's female runners were the first two women home, winning their respective age groups and smashing their previous personal bests in the process.
Nicola Woodward won the FO40 section in 10 minutes, 53.4 seconds, breaking her own previous personal best by 40 seconds and the Track and League record, which had previously been set by Joanne Lee, of Tynedale, in 2014.
Team mate Vicky Haswell was the next fastest woman on the night, winning the FO35 section in 11 minutes, 13.1 seconds, which was 20 seconds faster than her previous personal best.

Also taking part in the 3000m were Jimmy Johnson, who was seventh MO40 home in a time of 11 minutes and 16.1 seconds, and Eddie Maddison, who was second MO70 home in a time of 13 minutes, 50.5 seconds.

Vicky also won the FO35 javelin, with a throw of 24.01m, just 1cm short of her own NEMAA record.
There was more success in the field events as Anna Harris won the FO45 long jump with a leap of 4.36m. Her win ensured that the Sunderland Harriers female team were awarded maximum points for their efforts in the team event.
Unfortunately the men did not have a complete team on the night, as there were only three competitors, so they couldn't score any team points.

However George Harden had a successful evening coming second in the MO55 javelin, with a throw of 22.94m, winning the MO55 high jump, with a jump of 1.25m, and coming sixth in the MO55 400m in a time of 1:07.9.

Sunderland Harriers enjoyed more success at Jarrow later in the week in the second North East Grand Prix of the season.

There were two runners from Andy Abbott's sprint squad in the 100m and they both won their respective age categories. Andrew Rhodes was the fastest U17 on the night, running a personal best time of 11.85, while his training partner Tobi Oladipo, who runs for Lasswade AC, was the fastest in the senior men's section with 11.66.
Jack Jarvis was fifth in the U13 boys 100m in a time of 16.39.

There were five runners from Sunderland Harriers in the graded 800m, with Steve McMahon the leading MO40, with a time of 2:02.87 and Jacqueline Etherington the leading FO40, with a time of 2.29.54.
In the MU17 section Cameron Lawton came ninth in heat 3 with a time of 2:19.73 and Rhys Clark was second in heat 4 with 2:21.10. Lydia Stoker was 10th in the same heat, with a time of 2:48.98.
