Under-13 Jacob Waterston won the Sunderland Harriers Christmas Pudding Run at the annual event at Silksworth Sports Complex.
The run took the form of a sealed handicap where athletes are given hidden handicaps according to their ability and that time is deducted from their finishing time to decide the race result.
The sealed handicap was a regular feature of North East road races up to and including the 1960s, before it dwindled out.
Jacob recorded 22.46 on the Sunderland Harriers 5k course and with his handicap time deducted, his time came down to 11.46.
In second place was Silky Striders senior woman Joanne Sleeman, who recorded 30.25 and with her handicap deducted she was given a time of 11.55. Under-15 Brandon Revell claimed third with 12.16 after completing the course in 25.56.
The fastest runner was former swimmer Joe Pomfret (16.46), whose grandfather Ernie competed in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics steeplechase final.
Over sixty runners completed the course with the record set for the run coming from Oliver James with 15.12 last year.
Herrington Country Park staged a parkrun on Christmas Day and a magnificent total of 353 runners turned out in the run won by Sunderland Harrier Steve Rankin (17.44).
Alyson Dixon finished eighth in 18.49. Herrington Country Park have a parkrun on New Year’s Day at 10.30am.
