Hearing Jodie Williams describe the most successful period in her athletics career is an unexpectedly disconcerting experience.

Given the travails she has experienced since the astonishing 151-race, five-year unbeaten streak of her childhood sprint career, it would be easy to assume she longs for a return of what might appear to have been halcyon days. What else could an athlete want than to know they will win every time they set foot on a track?

The truth is far more complicated and – having come so close to twice quitting the sport over the past four years – it is only now after much reflection that she has fully come to terms with it almost decade later.
