SUNDERLAND STROLLER ALYSON DIXON IN RACE AGAINST TIME TO BE FIT FOR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP MARATHON

Sunderland Stroller Alyson Dixon faces a race against time to be fit for the European Championship marathon in Berlin.

She has been suffering from an inflamed heel bursa since the Commonwealth Games marathon and has only been in training for a few weeks after the problem responded well to treatment.

The Olympian had her first fitness test in yesterday’s Lambton Run on the tough multi-terrain 10k around the Earl of Durham’s vast Lambton Estate at Burnmoor.

Although she won the women’s race in a record of 38min 51sec, she said afterwards that it was the hardest 10k she had ever done.

Dixon said: “That was really tough and I found it hard going – I have just no speed in my legs.

“I’m doing 100 miles a week and building up my endurance. But I have still much to do. I have only seven weeks left until the race.’’

There may be another reason why she felt a little jaded during the race, as she ran 10 miles before the event.

She then finished off with a training run of eight miles around the estate after the race.

Dixon finished 10th overall (38.51) to beat Sunderland Harrier Alice Smith’s previous women’s record (40.01) from 2016.

The race winner was Sunderland Harrier Oliver James, also in a record run of 33.40....
